Many parents of breast-fed babies worry that their baby is gaining too much weight in the first few months. Let us reassure you: this is perfectly normal. The growth charts that most pediatricians use are based on data from the 1950s, when the majority of babies were formula fed. Breast-fed babies have a quite different pattern of growth -- in particular, they gain weight faster during the first three months of life and then slow down until between 12 and 18 months. If you aren't aware of this pattern, you may also worry later that your baby is not eating enough.
